Dr. Monica Santamaria-Fries is a board-certified anatomic and clinical pathologist with over 30 years of experience in diagnostic pathology and laboratory medicine. She currently practices with San Jose Pathology Medical Group at Saint Francis Memorial Hospital, providing surgical pathology and cytopathology services. Her expertise spans women’s pathology, urologic pathology, and cytopathology, alongside clinical laboratory management, where she has consistently met regulatory and accreditation standards.
Previously, Dr. Santamaria-Fries spent over three decades at Kaiser Permanente Santa Clara, serving as Chief of Pathology and Laboratory Director for more than 15 years. She also held the role of Assistant Chair for the regional pathology department, supporting over 120 pathologists. During her tenure, she led operational and quality improvement initiatives and advanced subspecialty integration across multiple facilities.
In 2020, she joined Proscia as Digital Transformation Officer, focusing on AI-assisted workflows and digital pathology innovation. Through her consulting firm, Digital Path Consulting, she advises on diagnostic workflows and digital pathology integration. Dr. Santamaria-Fries is passionate about merging traditional diagnostic excellence with cutting-edge technology to enhance pathology practices. She trained at the University of Texas Health Science Center, with fellowships at MD Anderson Cancer Center and UC San Diego, and is an active member of several professional pathology organizations.
